12626_464040596979332_1363656181_n-el-Tusi, Risale-i Si Fasl (Book of Thirty Chapters- a treatise on astrology and calendar), Chapter 28 Meanings of the planets [NAME.] The Moon we find called by the Ancients, Lucina, Cynthia, Diana, Phoebe, Latona, Noctiluca, Prosperpina; she is neerest to the Earth of all the Planets; her colour in the Element is vulgarly known:

[MOTION.] she finisheth her courte through the whole twelve Signs in 27 days, 7 hours and 43 min. or thereabouts: her mean motion is 13 degr. 10 min. and 36 seconds, but she moveth sometimes lesse and sometimes more, never exceeding 15 degr. and two min. in 24 hours space.

[LATITUDE.] Her greatest North Latitude is 5 degr. and 17 min.(or thereabouts) Her greatest South Latitude is 5 degr. and 12 rn-in. [DAY OF THE WEEK.] Her day is Monday the first hour and the eight, after the rise of the Sun.

The Head of the Dragon is Masculine, of the nature of Jupiter and Venus, and of himself a Fortune; yet the Ancients doe say, that being in Conjunction with the good he is good, and in conjunction with the evil Planets they account him evil. The Tayle of the Dragon is Feminine by Nature, and clean contrary to the Head; for he is evil when joyned with good Planets, and good when in conjunction with the malignant Planets. This is the constant opinion of all the Ancients, but upon what reason grounded I know not; I ever found the North Node equivalent to either of the Fortunes, and when joyned with the evil Planets to lessen their malevolent signification; when joyned with the good to increase the good promised by them: For the Tayle of the Dragon, I always in my practise found when he was joyned with the evil Planets; their malice or the evil intended thereby was doubled and trebled, or extreamly augmented, &c. and when he chanced to be conjunction with any of the Fortunes who were significators in the question, though the matter by the principal significator was fairely promised, and likely to be perfected in a smal time; yet did there ever fal out many rubs and disturbances, much wrangling and great controversie, that the businesse was many times given over for desperate ere a perfect conclusion could be had; and unlesse the principal significators were Angular and wel fortified with essential dignities, many times unexpectedly the whole matter came to nothing.

Head and Tail of the Dragon : The Lunar Nodes

luna_n5g

From the point of view of own planet, the Sun and the Moon appear to be about the same size. This is because the Sun is four hundred times larger than the Moon, but also about four hundred times the distance from Earth. From earliest times this has exerted a strong psychological relationship to the two luminaries, encouraging the belief that they are of equal but different importance. The Sun may be the source of all energies, but it is the Moon that determines the tides and has the most immediate effect on our moods and earthly activities. The Moon in astrological practise is therefore of great significance. In fact, in most systems, she is given much more importance than the current frenzy for Sun sign astrology would imply! The Moon’s Nodes are not planets. They are points in space indicating the intersection of two orbits.

The elements to be considered are a) the Ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun around the Earth, which is actually the orbit of the Earth around the Sun; and b) the orbit of the Moon that which revolves around the Earth. The planes of these two orbits intersect each other at 5 degrees, 8 minutes and 40 seconds. The line of intersection is the axis formed by the Moon’s Nodes. (See Rupert, Cycles of Becoming: The Planetary Pattern of Growth. 1978 p.54). The Nodes do not move at an entirely predictable speed and vary from day to day.A total solar eclipse – but cloud cover means Australia's best viewing area might get only a glimpse

They are either calculated as “True” or “Mean.” True is the ‘ exact’ position of the Nodes at any given time, while Mean is the presumed position based on the average speed. With the assistance of computers, most astrologers have opted to use the True Node, but the matter of which is more eloquent is still debated. The Mean Node is always retrograde, whilst the True Node may occasionally be direct as if it’s wobbling. That’s because the True Node takes the gyroscopic relationship of the Sun/Moon into account. It may be argued, then, that it now makes little sense to use the Mean Node when it is just as easy to calculate the True Node. However, this is somewhat illusory: Since “in the strict sense of the word, even the ”true” nodes are true only twice a month, viz. at the times when the moon crosses the ecliptic. Positions given for the times in between those two points are just a hypothesis. They are founded on the idea that celestial orbits can be approximated by elliptical elements. This works well with the planets, but not with the moon, because its orbit is strongly perturbed by the sun.

Another procedure, which might be more reasonable, would be to interpolate between the true node passages. The monthly oscillation of the node would be suppressed, and the maximum deviation from the conventional ”true” node would be about 20 arc minutes” See the Swiss Ephemeris for further explanation. I would, therefore, recommend experimenting with both systems. An obvious advantage of using the Mean Node is that it is what was used traditionally, so most commentaries of the meanings will have used this method. The North and South Nodes of the Moon are also known in Vedic astrology as Rahu and Ketu respectively. The North Node is considered as the head of the dragon, while the south is considered to be the tail. In Vedic astrology, the Nodes are considered malefic, with Rahu being comparable to Saturn as Ketu is to Mars. But this is true only as a loose planetary analogy, as “Ketu when inauspiciously placed, can ruin significations in an uncommonly awful and devious way. Whereas Rahu disturbs by way of lethargy, grossness and insensitivity: it does so in a manner that is much less intense and purposeful (Braha, James T. Ancient Hindu Astrology 1986. p.34).

The fascinating myth of Rahu and Ketu is told in the Mahabharata. The Hindu gods wanted to generate soma, an elixir of immortality. The idea was that the gods were to drink the elixir and become immortal. This was not an easy task, so the gods asked for help from the demons to stir the oceans to produce the elixir. Out of this churning ocean the Sun, Moon, goddesses, and magical things were produced together with the soma. Vishnu took charge of distributing the freshly made soma to the gods. However while the soma was being passed out, the demons began to battle with the gods for a taste of the elixir. There was much confusion and Rahu, one of the demons, disguised himself as a god and drank some of the elixir. The Sun and Moon recognized the imposter and advised Vishnu. As Rahu was swallowing the soma, Vishnu sliced off his head with a sword. However, because the soma had passed into the throat the head had already become immortal. To avenge the Sun and Moon, Rahu chased the Sun and Moon across the sky and tried to eat them, occasionally catching and swallows one of them. This caused an eclipse, but when the victims fell out of Rahu’s mouth, the eclipse ends.

We do know that the Nodes are an important element in predicting eclipses of the Sun or Moon. NASA ‘” confirms that eclipses only occur if the satellite of a planet is located within 0.5 degrees of the plane of the Ecliptic, on a line which passes through the centre of the Sun and the Earth. The Moon travels along an orbit which is inclined by 5 degrees to the Ecliptic plane, so there are only two opportunities each month when it passes through the plane of the Ecliptic, called the ascending and descending nodes. These two points connected to the barycentre of the Earth-Moon system ( roughly the centre of the Earth ) define a ‘line of nodes’, and eclipses of the Sun and Moon will occur if this line of nodes coincides with the line drawn between the centre of the Earth and Sun. Again, the Moon also has to be within 0.5 degrees of one or the other of the nodes so that the disk of the Sun is partially or totally covered in a solar eclipse. A similar argument explains why lunar eclipses do not happen every full moon at the node opposite the Sun from the Earth.” See NASA for more information.

The image above shows the conditions necessary for an eclipse. Note that the North Node is pointing to the Sun. Modern Western astrologers do not tend to see the Nodes in the same light as either Vedic or Traditional Western astrologers and have invented some very exotic meanings without much coherent rationale. Often they take the politically correct route, suggesting nothing can be wrathful or malefic in the ‘New Age’ and that the very idea of ‘malefic’ belongs to a less ‘enlightened’ age. There are many who consider the nodes as essentially karmic signatures, but then become surprisingly vague or aggressively retributional and dogmatic. In the case of the latter, I’m thinking of the ‘tone’ of much of Schulman’s work on the subject.

William Lilly writes that

“The Head of the Dragon is Masculine, of the nature of Jupiter and Venus, and of himself a Fortune; yet the Ancients doe say, that being in Conjunction with the good he is good, and in conjunction with the evil Planets they account him evil. The Tayle of the Dragon is Feminine by Nature, and clean contrary to the Head; for he is evil when

joyned with good Planets, and good when in conjunction with the malignant Planets. This is the constant opinion of all the Ancients, but upon what reason grounded I know not; I ever found the North Node equivalent to either of the Fortunes, and when joyned with the evil Planets to lessen their malevolent signification; when joyned with the good to increase the good promised by them: For the Tayle of the Dragon, I always in my practise found when he was joyned with the evil Planets; their malice or the evil intended thereby was doubled and trebled, or extreamly augmented, &c. and when he chanced to be conjunction with any of the Fortunes who were significators in the question, though the matter by the principal significator was fairely promised, and likely to be perfected in a smal time; yet did there ever fal out many rubs and disturbances, much wrangling and great controversie, that the businesse was many times given over for desperate ere a perfect conclusion could be had; and unlesse the principal significators were Angular and wel fortified with essential dignities, many times unexpectedly the whole matter came to nothing.” (CA. I. 82)

I don’t know why Lilly suggests that “it’s the constant opinion of the ancients because it isn’t.” Nevertheless his own position is clear.

Consider this : “the original meaning of the Sanskrit word ketu is “light,” “clarity”
(synonymous with the etymologically related adjective citra of the Pahl. gōchihr), which is in apparent contradistinction to the light-devouring function of Ketu as eclipse demon.” ( Dragon in Medieval East Christian and Islamic Art.(2011)  Sara Kuehn p. 144. Significance becomes highly complex :

The esoteric conceptualisation of the dragon
is illuminated in the allegory of a hero’s spiri-
tual journey in A Tale of Occidental Exile written
by the mystic Shihāb al-Dīn yaḥyā Suhravardī :

If you desire to be delivered along with your
brother [i e , speculative reason, the guide (ʿāṣim)],
do not put off traveling Cling to your rope, which
is the dragon’s tail (jawzahr) of the holy sphere
that dominates the regions of the lunar eclipse
[the realms of the eclipse denoting the world of
ascetic practice]

Solar Eclipse from Ibrahim Hakkı of Erzurum Marifetname The Book of Skills &Enlightenment

The hero passes beyond the material world and
reaches a light, the active intellect, which is the
governor of this world He places the light in the
mouth of the dragon, the world of the elements,
that “dwelt in the tower of the water-wheel [i e ,
the sky which turns like a wheel], beneath which
was the Sea of Clysma [i e , the water below the
sky] and above which are the stars the origin of
whose rays was known only to the Creator and
those “who are well-grounded in knowledge ””

(Kuehn p. 142-3).

This is fascinating material; but for all practical purposes, it restates the words of the Buddha: astrology no longer applies to those who are enlightened.

I have changed my view more than once over the years. I have read everything I could get my hands on regarding Traditional Astrology. There is no consensus but I’m giving the last word to Al Biruni. He is discussing the relative conditions of the luminaries:

“When both the luminaries are in aspect to each other, and to the benefics, and are in their own sections of the signs of the benefics, both of them are strong. But if they are in situations unsuitable to them, and the malefics, full of enmity are above them, and the benefics below, or are eclipsed, or near the dragon’s head or tail, especially the latter by less than 12 degrees, both of them are weak.” (Instructions p. 110.)

Elswhere he writes: “Some say the Head of the Dragon is Male and Diurnal and the Tail Female and Diurnal, but this is quite illogical.” (Instructions p.  27- 28 ) He then proceeds to explain the many ways any element of the chart can be changed by its relation to other elements.

Neither statements are dogmatic. In fact, it’s quite nuanced. But the nodes needing to be less than 12 degrees in either direction speaks volumes. There are conditions that can ameliorate the influence but that doesn’t stop the nodes from being the ‘light eating monster’ when unrestrained by a number of balancing factors. Clearly, he isn’t making much of distinction here between the head or the tail.

I have found this approach to be most useful and accurate. This work as well in the Judgment of Nativities as they do for Electional and Mundane. The nodes have a special place in the astrology of vulcanology as I hope to demonstrate in a future article.

Ravi Shankar

Ravi Shankar was arguably the best known and most revered player of the sitar in the world. He passed away at the age of 92 on 11 December 2012 at 4:30pm PST.  Shankar had been admitted to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, San Diego, California after complaining of breathing difficulties. According to The Ravi Shankar Foundation, Shankar had suffered from upper-respiratory and heart issues over the past year and underwent heart-valve replacement surgery on 6 December 2012.

Shankar has been refered to as the father of world music. I think this came as a great surprise to him. He couldn’t understand why pop musicians would want to play the sitar. Eventually he went on to play with the likes of Yehudi Menuhin. At a concert in the late 1960s, he was horrified that members of the audience were kissing. He was more than a bit irritated that western audiences failed to understand the sacred nature of his music, and one has to assume that kissing during a perfomance was like a form of blasphemy to him.

I have what is allegedly accurate natal information provided by Kundli Sangraha Tendulkar and have cast two natal charts for Mr. Shankar using Regiomontanus and Whole Sign houses, the latter being somewhat closer to the Indian system.

In loving memory of Ravi Shankar

This is the video chosen by his daughter, Anoushka Shakar, to remember her father and thank all those who sent their blessings and condolences.  This piece was played inside the Kremlin. In concert are Ravi Shankar’s Indian Ensemble, the Russian Folk Ensemble, the Government Chorus of Ministry of Culture of USSR, and the chamber orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic. Whole Sign.

I will not be going into an in depth reading of these charts at this time. For now, I want to be certain this is in fact the correct natal information. Although I have no reason to doubt the source, I do find the horoscopes to be problematic for a number of reasons. The  Whole Sign chart is much less s0. I will restrict comments to this house system for the time being. Here are some preliminary thoughts

First of all, the Moon is Void of Course. This is not a particularly rare event, but she is also in her Fall. The Sun is however in his Exaltation and in the first house.  Mars disposits both Sun and Ascendant. In fact, Mars is overwhelming strong in this chart. He is chart almutem, the almutem of profession and the killing planet.

Venus is exxalted in Pisces in tight conjunction with Mercury also in Pisces and in his fall. They are in the twelfth house  The chart is of the day and hour of Mercury.

When we look at the fifth house, we find Jupiter in Leo. The fifth house is the topos of children, theatre and music among other things. This house in disposited by the exalted Sun and home to Jupiter in Solar Leo. We can see how all these elements can work together.

Perhaps the most glaring difference between the two house systems is that Regiomonatus puts Saturn in the fifth, which seems untenable to me.

Comments and constructive feedback are most welcome.

Richard Wright : Leonine Obscurity

This is both a brief study of the abilities of traditional astrology to provide accurate readings and a tribute to a great musician and gentleman who never received the recognition I believe he deserved. It was first published on a list I moderate immediately after the untimely death of Richard Wright on 15 September 2008. Mr. Wright died of cancer within seven weeks of entering his Mars Firdaria. Ironically perhaps, the article garnered no initial interest on the list.

A Google search for Rick Wright or Richard Wright will generate a number of results and until the news of his death you would be lucky to get the one you were looking for on the first page. Try the same with Roger Waters, Syd Barrett or David Gilmour and Google will complete the name long before you even finished typing it. In fact I note that Gilmour is even included in the Word spell checker!

Amazingly, this founding member of Pink Floyd requires an introduction for many people. He was the band’s self taught keyboardist and vocalist even prior to them adopting the name Pink Floyd. He wrote “The great Gig in the Sky”, “Us and Them” and many, many other works that are played on the air virtually every day since they were written decades ago. Wright remained active in the band, showing up in live performances and recordings until very recently.

The fact that he was the first to die, with nobody outside the family knowing he was even ill, made the event all the more poignant. He was even forced out of the band by Roger Waters during the production of the now legendary The Wall album. He was in fact relegated to the role of sessional musician, preferring not to confront Waters and his reportedly vicious litigations and personal attacks. It is said that Wright became suicidal.

His innovations in keyboard and synthesizers influenced many in the music world. He also had a superb singing voice. I had to ask myself how a man with Sun, Mercury, Jupiter. N. Node and (for the interest of modern astrologers) Pluto in Leo in the 10th and 11th houses could manage to remain obscure in one of the best known progressive rock bands in the world? His solo albums are virtually unknown, despite this fact.  Wright was always eclipsed by other band members.

This might then be primarily a study in the all important Ascendant, a secondary consideration in modern astrology, but not in traditional. My sole purpose for including the outer planets in his chart is to illustrate how traditional astrology can reveal what modern can not.

Richard Wright was born 28 July 1943 @ 12:01 pm in London, England

The Ascendant is disposited by Venus in her fall in the 12th house. She cannot ‘see’ the Ascendant or, to borrow a title from a Pink Floyd album, obscured by clouds. Could this alone explain it? No, but it goes a long way! Who would have thought that those 10th & 11th house Leo placements could hide their light under a bushel?

But there is more. We also see that the Moon is with Saturn and Void of Course. She is slow and well separated from a trine to the Ascendant. Her next aspect will be a square to Mars and then Venus. Mars in the 8th is in detriment and squared Mercury and the Node. This leaves us with abundant musical outlets certainly, but not much in the way of being ‘seen.’

The placement of Mars in the 8th house is unfortunate enough, but he also disposits the 7th house of open enemies. The 12th house of hidden enemies is disposited by Mercury, where we find the fallen Venus in Virgo.

We have found the reasons for his otherwise irrational misfortunes and obscurity.  Of course, there are many factors to aid in his musical accomplishments, just not much help to allow him to shine as brightly as other far less accomplished musicians and even members of his own band.

The dispositor of the 6th house is a Solar Jupiter with Mercury and Sun in the same sign. Venus is almuten of the 5th house. Mercury is the chart almuten and significator of manners.

As far as temperament goes, in spite of all that fire and the Sun as Lord of the Geniture, it is a perfect three way balance of Choleric, Sanguine & Phlegmatic. We could say that disposition of the 6th house in part dictated his comparatively subordinate role in the band.

This phenomenon fascinates as much as his death saddened me, the latter occuring within 7 weeks of his 65th birthday and again in obscurity. His family issued a simple statement that he had passed away after a brief battle with cancer.

Consecutive Full Moons in Scorpio

There will be two consecutive Full Moons in Scorpio in 2008. The last one occurred 20 April 2008 @ 2:33 am pst. This is not to be confused with the Blue Moon phenomenon, which is a fourth Full Moon in a given season. That occurs approximately every 2.7 years to reflect the fact that the Solar Year is longer than twelve Lunar Cycles, but less than thirteen. It is commonly misunderstood that a Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a given calendar month.

Nevertheless, to have two consecutive Full Moons in any one sign is a rare enough event. I am giving this pair a little extra attention because the configuration is of great interest for a number of reasons.

The April chart had Saturn as the ruler of the Ascendant retrograde in the seventh house with the Dragon’s Tail. The Eight / Two axis is known as the Gates of Hades or Domain of Typhon.  Note that in the May chart the Sun and Moon change places on the same axis.

The Moon is parallel Sirius and conjunct the Arabic Part of Understanding. The parallel aspect is much stronger than the conjunction. The Moon is in her fall and the powerful influence of Sirius brings passionate, searing intensity to an already volatile mix. The Moon in the traditional decanate of Mars, accentuates her already Martian nature. She is disposited by Mars in Cancer, the sign of his fall. This provides what is called a negative mutual reception. Both are in the sign of their own fall. A weak malefic is a damaging one.

According to Ptolemy, Sirius, the brightest of all stars is of the nature of Jupiter and Mars. With the Moon, there is general good fortune, if free of malefics. This is a case of a highly baneful situation being ameliorated by association with a particular star and Arabic Part. However, this relief is slight considering the overall picture. Regrettably, the planets have delivered their promise by way of global catastrophes in the same elements. Much suffering could have been avoided if the celestial forcasts had been heeded.

In itself, we can then see that the chart is certainly challenging enough, but its full import is seen with the second opposition in the same sign a month later.

The second consecutive Full Moon in Scorpio occurs 19 May 2008 @ 4.44 pm pdt, just before the Sun enters Gemini. Note that Saturn has gone direct and sits on the same degree as the Full Lunar Eclipse of 20 February 2008 @ 7:26 pm. pst. It is also in almost precisely the same position as it was in the April chart.

The May chart has Venus combust in the eighth house and, although dignified by sign, cannot do much due to both combustion and house placement. Venus is ruler of the Ascendant and caught up with the Sun’s opposition to the Moon on the same axis.

Morover, the Dragon’s Tail is besieged by Saturn and Mars. Both Saturn and the South Node are in the twelfth Lunar Mansion, Al Safah, the Changer of the Weather. Mars disposits the Part of Fortune, found in the unfortunate sixth house in the Mansion of the Belly. By any standards, this is a nasty piece of work.

With the current vulnerability to seismic activity, particularly around the Pacific rim, Central Asia and all countries where the Lunar Eclipse was visible,  vigilence and preparation should be a matter of course. Any country under the governenance of Virgo should also beware. Extreme siesmic activity is often the case with Sun, Jupiter and Saturn in Earth signs; and here we have exacerbating circumstances.

Ptolemy does not mention China by name, but the country would fall under what he calls the second quarter:

“which embraces the southern part of Greater Asia, the other parts, including India, Ariana, Gedrosia, Parthia, Media, Persia, Babylonia, Mesopotamia, and Assyria, which are situated in the south-east of the whole inhabited world, are, as we might presume, familiar to the south-eastern triangle, Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn, and are governed by Venus and Saturn in oriental aspects.” (Tetrabiblos. Bk II. p. 43)

This places Myanmar (formerly Burma) and China under the governance of the Earth triplicity at a time when Saturn, Sun and Jupiter occupies these signs. What he calls Ariana is what is now known as Afghanistan and Pakistan as far east as the Indus.

The Moon was Void of Course in the 24th degree of Leo, crossing the Dragon’s Tail and activating a square to the Sun when the 7.9 magnitude quake hit the Chendu area in the Szechuan province of China. The Sun was cojoining with Algol. The result was mass destruction causing the death of 10,000 people as the result of the quake and aftershocks. The Chinese refer to Algol as the star of “piled up corpses”

In the chart for 19 May 2008, the Sun is conjunct the Fixed Star Alcyone, the brightest of the Pleiades, situated on the shoulder of the Bull. It is of the nature of Mars and the Moon. Negatively the star is associated with blindness caused by fevers, either literally of figuratively. The spread of disease as a result of the catastrophes in Myanmar and China is a very real, but preventable threat; but first, blindness must give way to vision. This is most particularly the case in Myanmar.

The Lunar degree of this chart falls in the nineteenth Mansion known Al Shaulah, The Sting. The Ascending degree is in the sixteenth Mansion Al Jubana, The Claws, and in Via Combusta. The latter is a region of the zodiac that contains many baneful stars, with the notable exception of Spica. However, the Moon in the 28 th degree of Scorpio has Venus for decanate ruler, rather than Mars as was the case in the April chart.img_sign_on islamic astrolabe

This Solar degree falls in the Lunar Mansion Al Thurayya (the many little ones) and is said to be profitable to sailors and alchemists. Taken figuratively, this augers well for the afflicted and an albeit belated rescue effort for Burma, particularly as the Sun moves into Gemini and the Moon enters Sagittarius, forming a fleeting but perfect trine to Mars at the time of the Solar Ingress.

She will be in parallel with Antares, the Heart of the Scorpion,  before the opposition fully separates. Venus will soon be out from under the Sun’s beams. This is a brief period of respite, before Mars closes in on the Dragon’s Tail. Excessive heat and fires fanned by high winds are predicted when the Moon co-joins with them.

Please bear in mind that the house placements will differ from one time zone to another. These comments are most specifically relevant to the Pacific Coast in that regard only.  The comments on fixed star placement and planetary aspects otherwise remain the same and are most immediately concerned with the areas Ptolemy identified with the Earth Triplicity.

Foundation Chart for Baghdad

Al-Biruni mentioned a foundation chart for Baghdad, calculated by the court astrologer, Nawbakht with the assistance of the great Mashallah. This occurred under the caliph Abu Ja’far Al-Mansur who believed Baghdad would be the ideal capital of the Islamic empire under the Abbasids. They were appointed to select a favourable time to begin construction of the capital. It was a truly massive project that would ultimately hire 100,000 labourers.

The date given is 31 July 762 02:40 pm, using Alchabitius Semi-Arc, placing Jupiter precisely on the Ascendant and allowing the builders to indulge in a late brunch. Here is the result:

The first question likely to arise in the modern metaphysical mind, is ‘were they completely mad?’ The first element most likely to strike fear and loathing into the sensitive New Age soul is the Grand Cross, that most hated and damning of all aspect patterns. There is a chart showing the aspects and modern planets here.

Saturn is in the fifth house, squaring Mercury and the Nodes. Worst of all, he opposes the Moon. As if they couldn’t botch things any worse, Jupiter opposes Mars. This is a fair presentation of how a modern astrologer would view this chart.

From a traditional point of view the chart is an entirely different entity and a stroke of electional genius. Let’s forget about geometry for one minute and think instead of essential nature. An aspect such as an opposition has meaning only insofar as natures oppose each other. In this case, the Moon is in the late degrees of Libra and Saturn in the early degrees of Taurus. The opposition of nature would occur if the Moon were in Scorpio.

Planets and luminaries, not aspects, have orbs. The Nodes emit no light and therefore have no orbs, for that is the basis of orbs in the first place. They are orbs of light. Although a modern aspectarian would view Saturn as squared the Nodes, by nature they are in fact trine and of the same element.

In fact, we can see that the astrologers were working within a relatively small window to find the closest thing to a perfect time. The perfect election exists only in the mind of God. A good election is comprised of the best possible moment, accentuating the beneficial and minimizing the malefic towards a desired end.

It is surely no coincidence that the Moon has entered the 12th Lunar Mansion, Al Simak. The meaning of this Mansion is “The Unarmed. Causes marital love, cures the sick … With Moon here, dig but do not marry or travel.” The astrologers might have prefered it were at the entrance degree of 22 Libra 43; but that would have left Mars above the horizon and the election would have been spoiled.

What we said about the Moon and Saturn, we can say about Mercury and Saturn. We find Mercury in the late degrees of Cancer which, like Libra is Cardinal. Fixed does not square or oppose Cardinal. It is a question of essential nature. So, the “Grand Cross” is in fact a geometric illusion and nothing more. Being in orb is not the point. Essential nature is.

Now, let’s look at the Mars / Jupiter opposition. The sixth house is considered an unfortunate house, along with the eighth and twelfth. One reason given for this is that it cannot ’see’ the Ascendant.

Mars has just set. It is also the perfect place to put  Mars because in the sixth House he is like a tiger in a cage. He is said to be in his Joy in this house. The astrologers probably thought that Mars was rendered far less harmful because of his house placement and the fact that he’s in sect.  At any rate, this is the chart the astrologers selected and must have felt that Mars was sufficiently subdued. The only other explanations that occur to me at this time is that their intentions were malicious or they were incompetent beyond imagination, neither of which are at all convincing.

This great new centre of learning has Jupiter in his own sign as the life blood of this new city, as the Ascendant is the health of the native. The Sun in the eighth place, by the rule of 5 is in the ninth house. This is the House of God and the Sun finds his Joy here in the royal sign of Leo. Here we find the Lord of the Geniture. The Arabic Part of Faith is found in the same house. The Part of Spirit is in partile conjunction with the Midheaven.

A protective Venus, disposited by the eleventh house Moon in Venusian Libra is placed in the house of partners and enemies. The enemies of Baghdad are rendered benign, as they have been for the majority of the city’s history. The eleventh house supports the tenth, which is in turn informed by the ninth. Baghdad was the greatest centre of learning and culture when Europe was a comparatively primitive backwater.

In this cursory reading of this election, it is evident that these astrologers were truly masters of the art. This also serves as a striking example of how a modern and traditional astrologer would view this election in the first place. The timing is ingenious from a classical point of view; yet the same chart seems mere folly when viewed through the lense of post enlightenment astrological theory.

In response to several thoughtful comments and queries (and two really obnoxious ones) regarding this article, I’ve added two other versions of the same chart. The first is Whole Sign. The second is Whole Sign using the Sidereal zodiac. The latter was mentioned by Mark and I think it deserves some close  study. I’ve set the charts up as thumbnails so you can comment on them individually if you prefer.

The Industrious and Modest reader, who truly Thirsts or Pants after an acquaintance with the works of God, will thank me for thus lending him mine Eyes, and for doing so great, but useful a piece of Drudgery, for the service of the Divine Urania. While in the meantime, the envious Sciolist will perhaps disdain the work, and cry Tush! Term it a Trifle: and it may be, will be so thankless and ungrateful, as to tell me, I might have spent my time to better purpose, if (with Sir W.P. ) I had numbered all the Lawyers Chimneys in the several Inns of Court in London: or, full as well. have slept away my time with Lampatho’s Spaniel. But, do not all wise men know, that Envy hath no Commerce, or Communication with true Industry. The Invidious Man, like the Dog in the Manger, is never contented; he’ll do nothing himself, yet be still snarling at the performance of others. Howbeit, – jacta est alea – The Work is done and I am proof against all Censure. The Commendation of Good Men will not make me Proud, neither shall I value what witry Malice, or gross Impudence can Speak or do against these my Endeavours – (With apologies to John Gadbury, Gent.)

New Moon in Taurus

The Moon is New in Taurus as I begin this web log, which seems particularly auspicious timing. We can say that the Moon is Cazimi, in her exaltation and fast in motion. Both she and the Sun are under the governance of Venus in her dignity. She is chart almuten. Both she and the Moon are in Hayz and angular. However, she is under the sun beams which diminishes her power.

Mercury is dignified in Gemini, in his own hour. He is separating from a square to Saturn and forms a sextile with Mars in his fall. Sun, Moon, then Venus are in an applying trine formation with Jupiter,  also in his fall.  However, opposed as they are, Jupiter and Mars receive each other by mutual exaltation. This is a minor reception and not necessarily a particularly helpful one. Nevertheless, it looks like a fair beginning, all things considered.

First I will see if this actually posts! <G> Then perhaps we can look at the regional weather forecast. Welcome to the Classical Astrologer Weblog!
